There are 244 years of traditions and celebrations in honor of our independence from England on the Fourth of July.  We all come together to rock our cheesy red, white and blue ensembles, light sparklers, over endulge on American barbeque and head to the beach for the holiday weekend.  America has its share of picturesque beaches so get your best swimwear ready and leave the passport at home.   A major bonus of staying in the states is not requiring a passport.  There are a few people, a rare breed, that do not have passports.  This is particularly great for you, if you’re one of them.  So whether you’re limited to a destination or just wanting to enjoy the land of the stars and stripes, I am sharing some popular beach resorts where G World Travel clients and myself have enjoyed ourselves.  

Florida

The Sunshine State holds almost half of the country’s best beaches but that isn’t really a surprise to any of us.  Filled with culture, world class shopping, fine dining and obviously, gorgeous beaches, Florida is the perfect spot for a quick getaway.  Only 2.5 hours from New York and with so many airlines offering direct flights, Florida is a no brainer.  With so many great beach towns, it was only fitting to break down the destination by coast.

East Coast

Miami aka Little Cuba, puts the pulse into Florida.  The W South Beach has everything one could want for a weekend of partying.  The location is ideal and it’s one of the only hotels on the beach in South Beach.  Pack your best bikini because there is quite the pool scene, complete with DJ’s and a packed crowd.  The Miami Beach Edition is a short drive north to Miami Beach, set on 3.5-acres of beachfront.  The hotel is more like a resort with an on-site nightclub, indoor ice skating rink and bowling alley.  You can also relax at one of the pools, treat yourself to a spa day or find your zen moment in the “relaxation lounge”.  The Fontainebleau has been around for some time and yet is still one of the hottest beach hotels in Miami.  Home to the infamous Liv nightclub and some of the best pool scenes in the area.  Take my advice and head to Scarpetta, the hotel’s award winning Italian restaurant.  Every time I’m in Miami, I make a stop here! The Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne manages to dodge the crowds with its private beach that seems a world away.  This resort is super-kid friendly and offers a fabulous kids’ program.  

Southeast

Take a step into a European Palace, right in Palm Beach.  The Breakers Palm Beach Hotel is one of my favorite properties in Florida.  The architecture, the grounds, the acclaimed restaurants and the private beach, make this property noteworthy.  Relax at one of the four pools, one being dedicated to adults only.  And, if you feel like splurging, the pool cabanas are worth every penny.  Each cabana is equipped with a flat screen TV, bathroom, shower, refrigerator, personal food & beverage service, complimentary wifi and more.  Not far from The Breakers is another luxury property, the Eau Palm, set on a pristine beach with a world-class spa and fine-dining.  Every amenity is top-notch, even the rooms were designed by Jonathan Adler.  The kids’ club house is a parents’ dream… I mean kids’ dream!  From toddler to teen, the kids will be super busy at the art studio, teddy bear stuffing station, beauty salon, fashion runway, DJ booth, TV area, and there is also a real stage!

The Gulf of Mexico

In St. Pete, the Don Cesar hotel aka The Pink Palace is set on a beautiful beach and is a great choice for families.  There is even an adorable 50’s style ice cream parlor with creative flavors to satisfy your sweet tooth.  Another beachfront property on the Gulf of Mexico worth noting is the JW Marriott.  The beachfront hotel is set on a sugary white sand beach, that could fool into believing you’re in The Caribbean.  The hotel is great for children with a sprawling pool area and dedicated kids’ club but for those seeking a more low-key stay, take advantage of the new adults-only section.  The Serene Tower is just what the doctor ordered for some well needed R&R.  The Resort at Longboat Key Club has 13-mile sandy beach with a never ending list of available water-sports.  There’s even a full-service marina offering jet-ski and boat rentals.   For those seeking a real luxury stay, check out the Ritz Carlton Naples.  The hotel is set on one of the nicer beaches in the area and if you prefer the pool, lounge at one of two salt-water pools.  Top-notch services include 7 restaurants, a massive spa, gaming room for the kids and a nature-lovers sea creature program which is a bonus for those who are traveling with kids.

California

The Golden State is easily one of the most diverse states in the country, it has it all!  From deserts to forests, mountains and vineyards, the Hollywood walk of fame and Mickey Mouse, oh and of course the beaches.  Paradise Point is located on a tropical private island, OK, so not exactly.  The resort is located in San Diego BUT you’ll feel as though you traveled to a private island.   The hotel is on a man-made aquatic park surrounded by palm trees, lagoons, and waterfalls.  It features bungalow-style cottages along a mile-long stretch of beach.  While Paradise Point gives us a tropical vibe, Pelican Hill is a bit more refined, upscale and grand.  You’ll pinch yourself when you get there, it’s a dream!  Located on the Newport Coast, between Laguna Beach and Newport Beach, perched up on lush hilltop, Pelican Hill is a place you travel to for an epic trip, not to just hang your coat for a night.  I mean, if you’re into the whole, being chauffeured around in a black Cadillac, spending your days in a private cabana equipped with personalized beverages, flat screen tv’s and minibars, and taking private helicopter tours to the vineyards, than yes, this is for you.  For something a bit more relaxed, Shutters on The Beach in Santa Monica is a cozy spot with direct access to the pier, beach and boardwalk.  Shutters on The Beach and the luxurious Hotel Casa Del Mar are the only two hotels with spectacular stretch of sandy beach in Santa Monica.  Hotel Casa Del Mar is home to the award-winning Catch restaurant and offers guests surfing lessons and yoga on the beach. 

Hawaii

The only state made up of only islands, Hawaii is home to some of the most beautiful, scenic beaches in the USA.  ALOHA! Waiki’s first hotel, the oceanfront Moana Surfrider combines historic charm with the best stretch of sand on Waikiki Beach.  Travel to the North Shore of Waikiki, the Turtle Bay hotel is isolated on five miles of shoreline, great restaurants, horseback riding, a heliport and more.  Travel tip: This is the only island with non-stop flights from the tri-state area.  However, it is totally worth it to suck it up and hop over to Maui and Kauai.  Maui has a lot going for it.  It’s the prom queen of Hawaiian islands and two of my favorite hotels are here, The Andaz, the newest hotel on the Wailea coastline and The Four Seasons, because, well, its the Four Seasons.  Enough said.  The Andaz is sleek and sexy without being obnoxious, a new look for the island, and the beach is superior to most other beachfronts on the island.  The Four Seasons is also set on famed WaIlea beach.  Go big or go home are my thoughts on this property.  The creme brûlée French toast is a must for breakfast!  For a more slower pace, Kauai is your place.  The island is super lush, exotic and mountainous, so there is no surprise it has some of the best views and The St Regis Princeville delivers a dramatic view on the north shore. The Big Island has a generally rocky coastline but the Fairmont is one of the few with soft white sand.  Make sure to sneak off for a spa treatment here! The outdoor bungalows are the perfect spot for self-care. 

Puerto Rico

Back in full bloom after the ugly Hurricane Maria peered her nasty self to the island in 2017, Puerto Rico has some great beaches. While many are off the beaten path, the El Conquistador Resort offers guests access to a private island, Palomino Island. The island can only be accessed via a quick ferry ride and is only to guests staying at the hotel. The secluded island feels like it’s a world away. Hence, why this hidden gem is my favorite beach spot in PR. The El Conquistador is finishing up its final stages of rehab but it will be back better than ever. A big draw for families, the hotel will still offer the kid-friendly pools with water park, waterslides, lazy river, kids’ pool and more.  As for my pick for a beachfront hotel, The Ritz Carlton is a cut above the rest with a price-tag that reflects it.  However,  you get what you pay for and between the service, the grounds, the restaurants and being it is set on one of the better beaches in the area, it is understandable.  Vieques, an island off the mainland, is in my opinion Puerto Rico’s best kept secret.  The little island can be reached by ferry or a hopper plane.  Hotels here are making a slow comeback but until their reopening, it is worth a day trip to!

The month of June has been a celebratory one for the LGBTQ community as it is the official month of pride! Many LGBTQ travelers assume incorrectly when picking a vacation spot.  While many think some destinations are off limits, others forget which islands frown upon gay travelers.  It’s amazing how much progress has been made but there is still some work ahead.  Jamaica in particular is regarded as unwelcoming to gay travelers. Barbados and The Cayman Islands also deserve to be shamed! However, there are many beautiful islands that share the Caribbean hospitality with all travelers regardless of who you love. 

ZOËTRY VILLA ROLANDI (ISLA MUJERES/CANCUN)

Your trip starts before you even arrive to the resort as hotel guests are transported to the private island via private yacht. Sounds like a Kardashian styled vacation already, no?  The hotel offers a secluded, luxurious, low-key retreat while focusing on holistic wellness.  

FLORIS SUITE HOTEL (CURACAO)

Curacao has a reputation for being particularly welcoming to LGBTQ travelers. The island is even the first to host the annual Caribbean Gay Spring Break Festival.  The Floris hotel offers a fun atmosphere for guests. Another plus is the concierge’s “Out and About” guide, which will help LGBTQ couples find gay-friendly activities throughout the island.

HYATT ZIVA (PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO)

Puerto Vallarta is a hot LGBTQ travel destination and the Hyatt Ziva chain has a wonderful reputation with the community, being honored 14 years in a row as one of the best places to work for LGBTQ equality.  BRAVO, HYATT!  Helpful tip: For some extra privacy and luxury, reserve a one-bedroom with a private plunge pool or splurge with a two-story presidential suite. And, when you’re not looking to relax, the hotel is just a quick ride away from fabulous nightlife, restaurants, shops and bars.

VALENTIN IMPERIAL (RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO)

Regardless of who you love, the Valentin Imperial is a good choice for all.  The all-inclusive, adult-only property is a popular choice amongst all travelers, except the kids! Leave them home! looking somewhere to tie the knot? This is a great spot to consider. 

ROYAL HAWAIIAN (HAWAII)

Since the 2013 passing of the Hawaii Marriage Equality Act, Maui has been a popular pick for same-sex travelers, destination weddings and honeymoons.  The most recognizable hotel on Waikiki Beach, the Royal Hawaiian, is one of the best on the island and within walking distance to the best dining, shopping, swimming, and beach activities.  The bright pink palace, is the creme of la creme of hotels in Honolulu.

BELMOND LA SAMANNA (ST. MARTIN)

Whether staying on the Dutch or French side of the island, St Martin aka St Maarteen is  proud to accept all types of travelers. The French side has the clothing optional Cupecopy Beach and the famous drag show at L’Escargot, while the Dutch side has the Orient nude beach. Sounds like a good time! Stop blushing! The Belmond La Samanna is certified by the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association.  

ARUBA MARRIOTT RESORT (ARUBA)

Aruba is known for being “one happy island”, and that happiness should go for all its travelers, and it does! The Aruba Marriott is popular with he LGBTQ traveler, with its H2Oasis adult pool, great restaurants and casino action at the Stellaris Casino.  The spacious guest rooms have upscale bedding, high-tech amenities and some of the largest balconies in Aruba.  The island is outside the hurricane belt making it a safe destination to travel to year round.

EDEN ROC CAP CANA (DOMINICAN REPUBLIC)

Enjoy the “suite life” at this hidden gem! Punta Cana, DR and surrounding areas are ideal for kicking up your feet and relaxing. The Eden Roc is no exception.  The hotel welcomes all guests! The service is impeccable, known for pampering their guests. The design of the hotel is gorgeous – think the Italian and French Rivieras, and well, let’s face it, if only we all had an eye for the finer things in life like the gay community. The design, food, amenities, service and all, easily makes this one of the best properties on the island.

SAN JUAN MARRIOTT & CASINO (PUERTO RICO)

The U.S.A. territory host an annual gay pride celebration in San Juan. Condado Beach is a popular tourist spot and in the middle of the gay-friendly zone. Right in the heart of it, is the San Juan Marriott Resort. When you’re not relaxing at the pool, take advantage of the exciting nightlife scene. Puerto Rico is always a good idea! 

If you were to ask me for a trip that is packed with big value, the Dominican Republic will be top of my list.  The destination offers big bang for the buck. This is largely why the island has seen a steadily increase in travelers and tourists each year.  Known for its sandy beaches, clear blue ocean and the luxury of an all-inclusive hotel option, it can be a vacationer’s paradise.  But, is it safe? This seems to be a hot topic lately.

While it was an exciting week with The New York Post, ABC News, NY Daily News and CBS News all reaching out to me for an expert’s opinion on the recent developments in the Dominican Republic, it was for unfortunate events and not an easy topic to discuss.  

More than 6 million tourists were welcomed to the Dominican Republic last year,
and the number is still climbing. That is a lot of travelers, like a lot a lot, and the growing majority returned home safely and with fond memories.  Unfortunately, we were reminded more recently that this is not always the case.  Just because the Dominican Republic is one of the most dreamiest vacation spots, doesn’t mean it’s also one of the safest.  Like anywhere, natural disasters, crime and violence could be an issue even in the very magical spots we dream of.  

The recent publicity of the island is not indicative of the country falling to ruins.  It also should not take away from the successful resorts, the Dominican people and the businesses that are doing an incredible job to keep their guests safe.  As a matter of fact, the crime rate in the Dominican Republic in the last several years has decreased.  Also worth noting, the State Department has not published any new travel advisories and only has the country at a level 2.  FYI: level 2 is low! This is the same level as many other islands and European cities.  And to be fair, you can get robbed, harassed, and assaulted pretty much anywhere. Numbers aren’t always a decent indication.

The news and social media tend to highlight negative press.  Because let’s face it,
negative news is almost always more worthy to cover because it attracts more
interest.  However, I get it, in this situation especially!  It is a bit overwhelming and alarming, so making sure my clients are comfortable in their choice of hotel and destination is a top priority.  I have had a number of clients concerned
about their future trips to the Dominican Republic.  From small families to large
groups and even a couple of destination weddings, many are reaching out for advice. 
While some chose to move hotels, others moved to a completely different island. The whole point of going on vacation is to relax, be stress-free and worry-free, and that’s
the type of experience I pride G World Travel on offering.  If clients are expressing
concerns, it defeats the purpose of travel. I got your back (almost literally), so if you need extra information or want to re-evaluate your vacation choices, then let’s do it!

The recent news has shed some light on the situation  and eventually even made me
aware that not all travel agencies and online booking engines will help.  Is it surprising? Not really, money is still money to some, bad news or no news.  I received countless calls and emails from travelers that were not given the support or the opportunity to move or change their plans to suit their needs best.  Ridiculous, outrageous even! This brings me to “smart travel”.  What would your mother tell you to do?  Here are a number of things I could agree with her on:  Don’t leave the hotel grounds especially at night.  Don’t go off anywhere alone.  Book your trip through someone who isn’t afraid to go up to bat for you.  Stay hydrated and take care of your body.  Remember,  you’re more likely eating new foods, consuming more liquor and sugary beverages than you would in your normal day to day, being more or less active than usual and getting a lot of sun.  In a destination like D.R., don’t rent a car and go on an adventure.  There are reputable companies set up to help from the airport, right into a marked car and directly to your hotel.  Hotels too will offer a transfer company.  Book travel insurance and consider the cancel-for-any-reason option.  Yes, it is more expensive but it gives you more coverage. Avoid the urban cities like Santo Domingo.  Check out the State Department’s website and the news.  You’ll be able to review which places and hotels to avoid.

I am very saddened by the series of events and my heart breaks for the families that
were greatly affected.  It is tragic.  There is no getting around it.  While I am happy to
reroute my clients that don’t want to travel to the destination, I am also happy to point others in the right direction when planning their trip to D.R.  I once heard, “Accidents hide in a little corner”, and they do.  A tragedy can hit us at anytime, anywhere.  Taking the right travel precautions, educating yourself on your destination (beyond your interest in searching for the best steakhouse, or if the hotel offers free WiFi) is you doing your part.  This will get you far, hopefully far enough like the Dominican Republic.

Getting married in a picturesque location with clear blue skies and sun kissed skin, sounds essentially like a week-long sleepover with your faves.  Seems like a no brainer, right? Except you have a laundry list of questions and concerns.  Just because you’re set on this new style of exchanging vows, doesn’t mean the rules of proper wedding etiquette should go right out the window. Now you’re drowning in questions: Who pays for what? Can we have a separate celebration afterwards? When do I send out the invitations? Can I still have a bridal shower? But not to worry, we’re going to dive right in and make sure to avoid any faux pas connected with destination weddings.

Be Thoughtful on Location

Picking a destination with one, non-stop flight is pretty much ideal. Because let’s face it: those of us from the tri-state area especially, are pretty spoiled. There are over a dozen islands we can fly to directly. We don’t really like the idea of connecting flights and long layovers. (I mean, who does?) Choosing a destination that already takes ten hours or more, and then requiring a connecting flight just isn’t going to fly with most of your guests. (Sorry Bora Bora, you’re just not it.) However, if you’re looking to tie the knot with just the two of you, or with a select few adventurous friends/family members, then why not? But wanting the full experience with both families, and all your closest friends means, picking a convenient place and make sure it’s affordable for your guests. You know your group best. Cater to their needs and meet with your own before narrowing down on a destination.

It Should Feel Like a Vacation

The wedding will most likely not just be a celebration for your guests, but also a vacation. Maybe even their annual one, depending on their budget. Your idea of a vacation may not be the same as your guests. The “disconnect” themed resort without Wi-Fi and cable may not be a winner, and neither is the wellness resort with mandatory 7 a.m. yoga classes. Is your destination LGBT-friendly for your “man of honor”? And kid-friendly enough for the flower girls? These are the things you should discuss with your travel agent before landing on a destination.  Keep it simple, choose a hotel with plenty of options. For example, if you’re going with a beach resort, make sure there’s a pool, some entertainment and some diversity when it comes to restaurants, you know, for the foodies and picky eaters among us. These are just a few experiences your guests will look forward to.

Save-the-Dates & Invitations

Save-the-Dates are usually not really a necessity when it comes to local weddings.
However, when it comes to destination weddings, I HIGHLY recommend them. The sooner you mail them out the better but aim to send them out 10-12 months prior to the wedding. This will allow guests ample time to plan things like getting the time off from work, applying for passports and visas (if necessary) and get airfare at a decent rate. Great last minute deals rarely exist.
What should be on your save-the-dates? Once again, keep it simple! Be sure to include the wedding date, location, your travel agents’ information (this will save you some headaches.  Guests will be more inclined to ask your travel agent about the different bedding and view options than you. I would love to inform your guests on any details and questions they have!) and “invitation to follow”.
Which brings us to the actual invitations, send them out around the 4 month mark and be sure to include all the wedding events & celebrations.  Don’t make your guests feel obligated to attend each and every event. The ceremony is the most important but do offer them something like a welcome dinner or a cozy bonfire. By adding “be our guest”, you’re reminding them that there are no extra costs for your guest. And, YES! The expenses are on you, the (almost) newly weds.

Guest Accommodations

If I haven’t told you already by now, always start with getting a travel agent. A good travel agent will help you with the planning before, during and after your trip at no extra cost. They will also be a huge help to your guests while they consider the options travel insurance, airport transportations, payment plans and booking excursions. Also for you, the couple, we offer inside information to help keep you “in the know”.  Aunt Sue just RSVP’d to the wedding as one, but booked a room with a plus one.  Trust me, you just saved yourself from scrambling to find her a seat for her plus one.  Don’t make your guests do the work and call overseas to reserve rooms and such. They’ll be smacked in the face with hidden fees and charges at check-out.  This will definitely spoil what was a great time.  A travel agent offers person to person contact.  It will leave them feeling much more confident and comfortable with booking.  Another great tip from your favorite travel agent (Yes, still me.) is locking in a group rate. I highly recommend reserving multiple room categories to accommodate all of your guests’ budgets. I still have nightmares sometimes of the one time I worked with a couple that insisted on reserving the minimum amount of rooms required to secure a group rate, against my recommendations.  Fast forward, the resort sold out completely and some of the guests were forced to book rooms at another hotel.  These guests ended up only being allowed to spend time with the couple and other guests at the wedding ceremony.  What a mess, that could have easily been avoided. By requesting a group rate, not only are you getting a deal for your guests, but you are also ensuring the hotel will hold a room for everyone on your guest list.

All the Flings Before the Ring (And After!)

There are many celebrations when you get engaged, and you should keep them coming.   You don’t need to limit your festivities but be flexible! For some guests, this is the only time and opportunity they have to celebrate this new chapter in your life with you. For your bridal shower, select options for your registry that won’t demolish the piggy bank. Plan a reasonable bachelor/bachelorette party and release some of the reigns. Another suggestion, plan your last hoorah during the destination wedding week with your bridal party.
Many guests will still be inclined to bring a gift on your wedding day, although it’s not really necessary, considering they traveled all the way to a destination of your choice. Just be appreciative and don’t set high expectations.  As for any celebrations after, do it! This gives guests that couldn’t attend the destination wedding  still a chance to celebrate this new chapter in your life as a married couple. 

The Costs You Should Cover

Long over are the days that our parents would cover the wedding expenses.  Some traditions just don’t hold. (tear!) Hosting a wedding nowadays is more expensive than ever.  Especially those of us in New York, New Jersey and surrounding areas.  Now, although, Your parents may want to help where they can, do not put that expectation on them.  As for your guests, they will be paying for the transportation and lodging, just as they would for a local ceremony.  Any organized wedding festivities, including pre and post wedding events, should be paid for by you as a couple.  Although, anything mom or dad want to help with is always appreciate.  Start batting those eyelashes! But what about your bridal party? Do what you can for them! These are supposed to be the most important people in your lives and although they want to be there for you, it’s most likely they don’t want to burn too much money.  Consider treating them to getting their hair and makeup done, paying their airfare and/or accommodations, wedding attire or any additional wedding costs.

Be Thoughtful, Not Cheap

Just like getting married locally, wedding favors are a must! It is your obligation to make a gesture of gratitude.  A couple I worked with recently, Nicole & Jay, were super thoughtful and clever.  They took their guests on a catamaran cruise instead of a trinket of some kind. Guests didn’t have to lug anything home (we all have enough wine stoppers and picture frames) and yet they were given the gift of additional memories. It’s a win-win!
Another must, when you’re not staying at an all-inclusive resort where liquor is included, have an open bar on the wedding day! Your friends and family are spending a lot to celebrate with you, the least you could do is give back and spend where you can. There are plenty of other things to cut your own costs on, like flowers, honeymoon or the number of guests. Like I’ve said before,  if you’re not doing an all-inclusive resort, hosting a welcome/farewell dinner at your cost is just another way of being generous and thoughtful to your guests.

Create That Adorable, Corny Wedding Website

Don’t be afraid to post about your crazy love story, engagement photos or anything couple related.  And, keep in mind that this is an important resource that will keep your guests informed about essential details about the destination wedding.  It will also get them excited to celebrate! Websites like TheKnot and Zola offer personalized wedding layouts for free! Warning: this is NOT your invitation.  It’s merely a point of reference and a helpful resource. Your paper invitations should be sent out with proper RSVP inserts.  Back to your website, do add the name of the hotel and its’ location, group rates, room options, the wedding date, and time, etc.  Also think about informative details like dress code! And I can’t stress this enough, add your travel agents’ contact information. You’ll be more than grateful when all the questions and requests are directed at them instead of you, it can really take a lot of the stress off.  My clients have my office number, cell number, social media and e-mail. They slip deep into my DM’s too!

Don’t Be a Control Freak

Do not over plan. I repeat do not over plan! Do give guests time to relax and enjoy their surroundings.  No one wants a day by day itinerary.  And, do not set the expectation that they have to be present for every single festivity.  At the minimum, set a day and time for a welcome celebration so everyone can get acquainted.  Sometimes the most fun will be had just hanging by the pool.  

Sometimes, traveling with multiple generations of loved ones, all with different ideas of the perfect vacation, it is tough to narrow down a property and destination that will keep all parties happy and busy.  The youngest members of the family want to play, teens want to hang out and the adults probably just want to relax with a cold cocktail (and, rightfully so!).  Forget the standard all-inclusive hotel.  It’s time to bump your vacation up a level.  Whether the guests are tiny tots, teens, parents or grandparents a vacation should be fun for all! These all-inclusive properties promise just that for everyone.

HardRock Resorts The Hard Rock chain stepped into the all-inclusive hotel industry several years back and has made quite the name for itself ever since.  The massive hotel chain can be found in the Dominican Republic and scattered throughout Mexico.  Each of its all-inclusive resorts offers endless activities for kids but does not forget about the adults in the family.  While the younger guests can play in the 29,000 square-foot sports facility allowing them to snowboard, ski and skate in doors, adults are trying their luck at the casino and getting spoiled at the luxury-level spa.  Other bonuses: a kid’s waterpark, ninja-themed obstacle course, arcade center, a Nicklaus-designed golf course, a digital media camp and lots of rock memorabilia on display to enjoy. There’s also a dedicated kids’ club opened until 10:45 p.m., giving parents time to play a few hands of blackjack, watch live entertainment or participate in a yoga class.  Many hotels have age limits but the exciting part for parents, the Hard Rock chain offers programs starting with just newborn.   

Beaches Turks & Caicos

I don’t think a list of “top family friendly all-inclusive resorts” exist without the mention of Beaches, specifically Beaches Turks & Caicos.  Although, there are two properties in Jamaica too!  In Turks & Caicos specifically, there is a 45,000 square-foot Pirates Island Water Park, which includes a surf simulator, kid-friendly pool and a kids-only swim-up bar that serves up juices and sodas.  It is a dream come true for any kid.  There are even private childcare options with all-certified nannies by the International Nanny Association and qualified with an Associate Degree in Early Childhood education.  So, you can relax at the thought of leaving your kids with the pros! We can’t forget about your favorite Sesame Street Characters waiting to create memorable experiences.  From bedtime stories with Abby Cadabby and baking cookies with Cookie Monster, these are moments your kids will not soon forget.  Meanwhile, teens can enjoy the unlimited games at the Xbox Play Lounge, and the teen disco, “Club Liquid”, where they can dance and hang out.  It’s not all about the kids though.  Adults can enjoy an array of water-sports, tennis lessons, the comprehensive scuba diving program and the “quiet” pools while sipping on a “Dirty Banana” (highly recommended, by the way!).  More recently, Beaches Turks & Caicos announced the premiere of “Voila”, a storytelling interactive spectacle featuring theater, acrobatics and must see surprises.

Grand Velas

Probably my favorite hotel chain to recommend to families, Grand Velas, manages to offer something for every family member without sacrificing quality and service.  Luxurious room accommodations (many with private pools), dining options that are a foodies paradise and top notch service are amongst the reasons parents love it here. Many family friendly resort are very commercialized and have an unauthentic, Vegas-style feel.  Grand Velas on the other hand, offers a true 5-star experience and is a favorite amongst not only parents but couples too. The grounds alone are a family experience all on their own. It’s a tropical paradise.  Teens are sometimes less than enthused by family vacations. The antidote: the newly renovated, teen club equipped with a home theater with movies, game room with an XBox Kinect, table games, karaoke set with a vintage dance floor, soft drinks, and NY-deli-style munchies.  The younger siblings have their own party in the kids’ club with supervised activities like piñata making and cooking classes. This gives parents time to catch up on some much needed r and r.  Back to family time, there is kite flying, eco-shows, kayaking, snorkeling, jet skiing, surfing and sailing in the bay.  The resort’s complimentary amenities make even the tiniest of guests feel like VIPs, with everything you could possibly think of (a crib, bottle warmer, teether, baby carrier, etc.).  If you’re looking for family adventures, delicious meals, a bit of romance and relaxation, look no further.

Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa

St. Lucia’s largest water park-with slides, waterfalls, and a lazy river is located on 85 acres of oceanfront at the Coconut Bay Beach Resort.  The property doesn’t boost the same luxury amenities as some of the other hotels on this list however, it holds its own with a fun-packed activities.  There are a wide arrange of activities for the whole family to enjoy together, such as family karaoke, movie nights, zip-lining, playing in a tree house, a 30,000 square foot paintball course, lazy river or climbing the mini rock wall. There are even separate wings for adults and families.  Travel Tip: some room categories are revamped which will help to elevate your stay. Don’t feel bad if you need to leave the kids behind. They will be busy at the kids club, Coco Coral Zoo and Cocoland, an aquatic playground. Meanwhile, adults have access to a notable spa, modern fitness center, an adults-only pool and tennis courts.

Planet Hollywood Costa Rica

Move over Hardrock, there is another big name making a splash into the all-inclusive hotel industry.  Planet Hollywood in Costa Rica is a fun-packed hotel for whoever lands at its doorsteps.  Specifically, great for you and your adult children, there are DJ’s bringing lively entertainment to the pools and into the evenings with their themed nightlife. Planet Hollywood offers a burger joint created by the one and only, award winning, Guy Fieri.  Amongst the 7 restaurants is also So Cal Gourmet Emporium.  For the younger family members there is Splash Zone and a kids’ club dedicated to making your kids feel like rockstars with Planet Hollywood TV, Walk of Fame Scavenger Hunt, Starlets Hall of Fame Party and more.  Keeping with the Planet Hollywood theme, the resort will include the “Your Soundtrack” program where guests can create a soundtrack to play in their suite.  Parents love the hotel app that allows them to book excursions, room service and more right from their phone. The hotel chain is expanding, so, ask us for the newest locations opening in the near future.  

The Grand at Moon Palace

The Moon Palace has been around for awhile but the new Grand is a total separate area and should not be confused with the Moon Palace.  The developers of the Grand have thought of everything and with their thoughtful planning, the hotel quickly jumped to the #1 spot on the Mexican Caribbean.  Children love the mini robes and slippers, in room mini-fridge stocked with their favorites and the abundance of kids’ activities.  You’ll easily find something to do and somewhere new to go between the 9 pools, 16 restaurants, world class spa, indoor bowling alley, state-of-the-art arcade center, glow-in-the-dark miniature golf, jungle gym, outdoor water park with wave pool, lazy river and mega slides, and more!  You can forget about hearing the dreadful “I’m bored” comments from your kids.  It’s impossible here! Hey dad, order a beer.  It will arrive in tall, cold, frosted glass. And, mom, check out the epic spa with the expansive spa menu, and take a cooking class.  This trip is for you too!

One of the more frequent questions I receive is, “How soon in advance should we book?” My response is always the same.  Book as soon as soon as possible!

Especially on the east coast most of us don’t really have a flexible schedule to play or plan with.  While juggling your kids’ school and sport schedules, and slaving away in the office, it can be hard to find that one perfect week to escape reality. Your free week is most likely the same week as many others.

President’s Day, also known as winter recess is high season on steroids.   The week of Christmas and New Year’s is the pick of the litter when it comes to finding time off.  Whenever traveling on a holiday, whether it be Thanksgiving or Memorial Day, booking in advance just secures the hotel and room category of your choice, and airfare before the inevitable hike in price.  Airlines are typically going to promote a sale with black out dates and restrictions.  Holiday weekends are usually part of these restricted dates. Traveling is simple: supply and demand. Holiday season? Enjoy the inevitable hike in price, with anything, but especially plane tickets. So the gist of it is really; get yourself together, book now!

STOP THE PRESS! You stumbled upon a website offering discount fares? What these particular websites, and even airlines, fail to mention is that these seats are standby or the “basic” economy fare with heavy duty restrictions. Meaning? No seat selection at all, no carry-on luggage, sometimes even no luggage at all and no changes or compensation allowed. Not to forget, the hidden multiple connecting flights instead of a direct one. Our favorite, right? Basically if you read anything that says “sale” or “special offer” and it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. 

Back to the hotel, as I’ve already mentioned before, holding out for last minute is a huge risk.  The standard room option is great for the budget seeker but what happens when that category sells out and you’re forced to consider the owner’s suite with personal butler.  You will end up paying too much, with crappy rooms or even being stuck with unnecessary luxurious extras (I mean we’d all love a personal butler IF we could afford it.)  Small note: Are you a family of 4 or more? Most hotels do not allow larger families to book the standard room category.  Larger families are required to book a room category that will comfortably accommodate everyone. When the only room option for your family runs out, you and your family can wave that beach and cold cocktail goodbye.

It’s rare to come across something that exceeds all exceptions and leaves an everlasting impression.  Hermitage Bay is like nothing you’ll ever experience.  It is a hidden gem just waiting to tug at your heartstrings.

Drive to the west coast of Antigua, you’ll reach the end of a rocky road and find yourself at a tall gate.  The gates open, think the “Wizard of Oz” meets “Jungle Book”, and clears way to an unpaved road and tropical oasis.  At the end of the road we were greeted to a friendly, inviting smile and before we knew it we were quickly ushered into the reception area of Hermitage Bay. Hermitage Bay is a boutique-style property set on a private beach with only 30 private villas.

Instantly, we were checked in and handed cool beverages and cold hand towels.  What is most memorable, is the moment you step away from the reception desk you are smacked in the face by the most dramatic view.   It’s hard to turn away from but when you do you’ll soon appreciate the intimate atmosphere, landscaped grounds and the charming staff.  The staff, wearing long caftans, are so passionate about the property and wear permanent smiles.  From that moment on, we would only be referred to as “Mr. and Mrs. Costa”.  Being we arrived early, we decided to start our beach day immediately! Within minutes two chaises were prepared for us by our beach ambassador, an ice bucket filled with cold bottles of water and our umbrella popped open.   Look around and you’ll appreciate the huge gaps between you and other guests.  The privacy and intimacy turns your vacation-mode up a notch.

The hotel provides a shabby chic design constructed of private villas that are every bit cozy as they are high end.  Solid wood shutters, handmade doors, old school lock and key, four-poster bed, Italian white linens, vaulted ceilings, contemporary bathrooms with soaking tubs, his and her flip flops and aromatherapy toiletries all make for an impressive first impression.  In the evenings, turn down service is provided and an inspirational quote left on your pillow; ah! it’s the little things! The property has an abundance of staff. The staff to guests ratio was incredible. Hermitage is where a barefoot experience meets 5 star elegance. Make no mistake, the hotel is a luxury property, yet they mastered keeping the atmosphere relaxed and refined. Walk the whimsical grounds where vibrant florals are climbing the walls and poking through trees and bushes.  You’ll find humming birds and butterflies dancing through flowers.  It was a real life Disney movie. The beach is sandwiched between rolling hills and covered in white sand and charming seashells.  The turquoise sea wraps around the property with sail boats anchored for the day.  No matter where you look there is a photo op.

We toured the garden villas, the lead-in room category which are conveniently located steps from the beach with beautiful ocean views.  These villas have expansive verandahs adorned with a daybed where you can’t avoid the sound of the ocean, not that you would want to! The next room category up are the hillside villas.  If you can’t afford to splurge on the hillside villas for the full length of your trip, I recommend splitting your time up between the more affordable garden villas and the splurge-worthy hillside villas.  Although, the garden villas do not disappoint as they are beachfront.  The hillside villas provide the most jaw dropping expansive views of the Caribbean Sea.  The highest hillside villas offer private infinity pools.  I found such inner peace sitting on my terrace overlooking the lush hillside and sparkling caribbean ocean. The hotel just does something indescribable for mind, body and soul.  I found myself staring at the glistering coastline for most of the day, lost in my thoughts and in a sense of relaxation that I had never felt before.  And, I never knew what I was missing out on with an outdoor shower.  It was an experience all on its own.  Green vines create shade and privacy with the perfect sized window that peaks out at the ocean. It was dreamy! Every inch of the hotel is well laid out and deserves a paragraph of its own.  

Much of the produce can be found on the hotel’s very own farm.  Take a tour and you’ll see what will be on the restaurant’s menu.  It’s a fun experience behind the scenes.  It’s hard to believe the hotel is all-inclusive when they’re pouring Moët champagne daily and offer an ever changing, gourmet food menu.   What makes a property exceptionally special is when you meet the people behind the scenes with their infectious energy and a passion for what they’re doing.  It is what wins me over.  It is clear that Hermitage Bay doesn’t wish to be part of the overcrowded tourism market.  They want to offer something different, an experience rather than four walls for you to rent for a week.  

My recommendations, ask the bartender for a Franny Freeze and request a boat tour from Devon.  The scenic coastline, shouldn’t be missed. Let me help you stay organized and give each of the girls the personal attention they deserve.  Also, in most cases, 20 different girls means 20 different forms of payment.  You’re trying to plan a bachelorette party, not be a personal assistant.  Collecting all different forms of payments while keeping track of who paid what and when is unnecessary.  Which reminds me, websites and most other travel agents, do not accept multiple forms of payment or the choice to pay with a small deposit.  At G World Travel, that is not problem!
